Do I Have to Appear in Court?

You Must Appear in Court if:

The violation listed on your ticket is not waiverable. This means you cannot simply pay the ticket and
must appear before the judge on the date shown on your citation.

You are required to appear in court if:

  • You were cited for speeding 36 mph or more in a school zone.
  • You were cited for speeding 25 mph or more over the posted speed limit.
  • This is your third speeding offense within the past 12 months.

Waiverable Violations (You May Pay Instead of Appearing in Court)

Speeding Violations

School Zone Speeding

  • Speeding 35 mph or less in a school zone: $159.50

Second Speeding Offense Within 12 Months

  • Total amount due: $184.50

First Speeding Offense Within 12 Months

  • Less than 25 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • Fine is calculated as $2.00 per mile over the speed limit, plus $109.50 court costs.

Example:

  • Speed: 70 mph in a 55 mph zone
  • 70 − 55 = 15 mph over the limit
  • 15 × $2.00 = $30.00
  • $30.00 + $109.50 court costs
  • Total Due: $139.50
